Breeding with frozen semen is the cornerstone of our business, accounting for around 90% of our breedings. There are numerous advantages to using frozen semen: it often involves lower upfront and total service fees, many allow for pay-on-pregnancy arrangements, ensures the semen is on site and ready when your mare is ready—removing the need to work around the stallion’s schedule—and opens up genetic opportunities with overseas stallions that would otherwise be unavailable.
Our frozen semen AI package is a set cost and includes all associated scans (2 hourly scans for post-ovulatory insemination), including pregnancy checks up to 45 days, and reasonable post-breeding fluid management, as well as typical reproductive cycle management drugs such as prostaglandin, deslorelin, and oxytocin. Agistment, culture/cytology, treatment for infectious endometritis, and specialised drugs (such as Settle) will be extra.
$1,300 ($550 deposit + $750 success fee, due only with a positive pregnancy)

Chilled semen can be an excellent option for mares with reduced fertility or for those that experience post-breeding endometritis caused by cryopreservation reagents in thawed frozen semen.
Our chilled semen AI package is a set cost and includes all associated scans, pre-ovulatory insemination within 12-24 hours, pregnancy checks for up to 45 days, and reasonable post-breeding fluid management, as well as typical reproductive cycle management drugs such as prostaglandin, deslorelin, and oxytocin. Agistment, culture/cytology, treatment for infectious endometritis, and specialised drugs (such as Settle) will be extra.
$900 ($350 deposit + $550 success fee, due only with a positive pregnancy)

Embryo transfer allows you to collect a fertilised embryo from a donor mare and transfer it into a recipient mare, enabling the donor to continue competing or breeding without carrying the pregnancy herself. It can increase the number of foals produced from top mares, give access to genetics that might otherwise be limited, and is especially useful for mares with uterine pathology that would prevent them from carrying a pregnancy to term. However, it is not generally suitable as a workaround for mares with persistent endometritis.
Embryo transfer is more costly because it requires synchronising 1-2 recipient mares, or more, for each donor, in addition to the normal donor insemination process.
Embryo transfer pricing includes all scans for donors and recipient(s), reproduction-associated drugs (prostaglandin, deslorelin, oxytocin, flunixin), post-breeding fluid management, and embryo flushing and holding media. Agistment, culture/cytology, treatment for infectious endometritis, and specialised drugs (such as Settle) will be extra.

Recipient
We generally do not run a recipient herd outside of those for our own donor mares, although we can help you to source a suitable recipient if we do not have one available. -
Some mares come to us with a history of infertility, and often clinical or sub-clinical infectious endometritis is the cause. Whilst we are generally unable to provide a fixed cost for treatment due to the unique specifics of each mare’s case, standard costs are listed below:
Culture swab sample collection $65
Culture/cytology small volume flush sample collection $100
Pathology: cytology, aerobic culture & sensitivity (pricing subject to change) $252
Treatment $240
High volume uterine lavage and infusion (labour and consumables included, including additives such as Sodium Lactate, DMSO & Tris-EDTA). Antibiotics charged separately. -
Drugs (in addition to those included in AI packages), such as Settle, antibiotics, steroids, NSAIDs, Altrenogest, are additional to the AI package cost. Note: these drugs are specialised and not required for most mares. We will discuss drugs with you if we feel your mare could benefit from them.
Cultures/cytology & blood draw chemistries are additional to the AI package cost. You may wish to have your mare cultured before breeding. Generally, culture and cytology are not required unless the mare presents with symptoms during the AI process or has a history of infertility/endometritis. We may recommend a blood draw to check progesterone levels in early pregnancy if your mare has indicators of this, but it is not usually required.
Veterinary procedures such as Caslick's suture or twin management. These will be discussed with you beforehand and may be billed directly to you by our vet. Most mares do not require a Caslick’s.
Walk-in scan $55
Semen collection from the airport (chilled) $55
We are located 30km from Palmerston North Airport. If you're local, you may choose to collect the semen from the airport yourself and deliver it to the farm.Frozen semen shipping
It is your cost and responsibility to have your frozen semen shipped to Maverick Sporthorses. We can help you arrange this process or combine it with one of our pick-ups. When we can, we utilise “shared tanks” to split cost among clients. -
Our agistment service provides horses with turnout in small groups of compatible mares, daily fresh grass breaks, and supplementary feeding with grass baleage, lucerne hay, and hard feed/supplementation as required. This ensures visiting mares are well-nourished, socialised, and able to move freely while maintaining optimal health and condition. We take great pride in ensuring the happiness and well-being of mares during their stay with us, supporting their health and optimising fertility. We have a small availability for mares paddocked alone.
All AI work is to be done at Maverick Sporthorses. Mares must be onsite for AI management and at least 14 days after AI until the first pregnancy check. You are welcome to take your mare home and bring her back for any additional checkups (25-day and 35-day scans included) as a walk-in.

Foaling down is the process of assisting a mare during the birth of her foal to ensure the safety and health of both mare and foal. Careful monitoring and management at this critical time can prevent complications, support a smooth delivery, and allow immediate attention to the foal’s first vital needs. We offer a very limited number of foaling down spaces.
Package cost includes 20 days of agistment.
We also offer a 10% discount on AI packages for mares rebred after foaling down here.$1,200
